The making of a series.

So, you want to write a book series?
First off, you need to come up with a unifying concept for all of the books. You also need a good background and an idea for the first book and the ones that will follow.
My series is a bit different from others. The books in the Guardian League and the Brigade
Trucking company series has a book dedicated to one of the characters. Each book can be read on its own but together, they create a shared world.
Some book series are not like this, and all of the books are intertwined. Some even have
cliffhangers to keep the reader going to the next book. You will not see that in any of my books as I want my readers to have a choice as to whether to proceed to book two or even take a look at book four or five, instead. I want their interest to take them wherever they want to go in their reading experience, hence, no cliffhangers. Plus, I once read a book with a cliffhanger and was sore at the author for including this and not warning readers about it. It felt almost as if she was forcing the reader to buy the next book in the series. I never want that for my readers. When my readers pick up one of my books, it is by choice and because they love me and support me.
So, writing a series is an individualized experience as I actually am writing the books. Each author is different, and each author will have different ideas and concepts as to what to do with the books and what to include.
Write what you like, and the rest will come.
